ALKA DAIRY

Alka Grain, Alka Feed, Home and dry,How much cereal does your dairy, beef or calf ration contain? 20% maybe or 30% max.

With this low level where does the energy come from in the feed?  It is hardly from the palm kernel, sunflower or wheat feed which have high inclusion rates in most compound feed to make them cheap.

The reason we hear all the time that these inferior ingredients need to be used is for fibre at grass.  But high levels of cereal cause stomach upsets, and of course traditionally this is true but for the last couple of years we have seen a change in this by including alka treated grain in our diets.

Our dairy and beef rations contain 60% cereal (maize, barley and wheat), 15% distillers grain and 20% soya hulls nothing else (no fillers).

You’ll be Home n’ Dry with Alkagrain

20% of the cereal content is made from ALKA GRAIN 150; this is a process where 150kg of HOME & DRY pellets are added to wheat or barley which results in a raw material which is now 30% protein, 60% starch and a PH of 8% (so now we have protein, energy and an alkaline feed source).

The high PH then neutralises the acidic nature of the other cereals to ensure the overall diet is ALKALINE and safe to feed at higher levels of inclusion.

RUMEN PH

The ideal rumen PH is between 6-7.  The ruminal microorganisms or stomach bugs are healthiest within this range increasing the dry matter intake and absorption of what the animal eats including grass and silage.

Trials have shown through the use of rumen bolus that animals fed a standard feed which is acidic can take up to 7 hours to get the PH back to its optimum level or at all.

So what if you could feed a high starch feed which already has a PH of 6 and above and therefore does not affect the rumen PH negatively significantly reducing the cows own energy in getting the rumen ph back to its desired level and maximising the DM and energy intake the animal eats.

Well now you can!

We have seen incidences this spring with lush grass where cows are very loose with bubbles in the dungs, this is evidence of acidosis and is obvious the cow is not maximising her intakes.

FEED COMPARISONS

We also here from farmers that they are only feeding 2 kilos and what is in that is irrelevant as long as it gets the cow in the parlour carries cal-mg and is cheap

The difference however in feeding a ration with 60% cereal and 20% cereal is 1.2kg of cereal as opposed to 400gm/hd/day or 3 times the energy intake from as little as 2 kilos and because of the high cereal inclusion it is still very competitively priced.

The same mix applies to beef animals and the same benefits are being achieved however we have increased the protein in the calf mix.

These rations are available from the FARM STORE in both bulk and min-bulk ton bags.

FARMING 2016

Whatever sector of agriculture you are in the last 12 months have been difficult.

Rain fell from October 2015 until late march 2016.

I never remember a season where we sold maize, grass, wheat, oats, beet  and barley seed all in the same week when conditions eventually came right late in the spring.

Prices across the board were poor and again the weather broke in the autumn making the harvest exceptionally difficult.

Let’s hope 2017 proves to be a better year with indications to that effect in dairy already.

We would like to thank you for your business throughout the year and from all of us In the FARM STORE wish you all a happy Christmas and prosperous new year.
